Chicken Fried Tofu

This chicken fried tofu recipe is for when you just want something deliciously bad for you. Although, it is high in protein — so it can’t be that bad…right?

A lot of variations can come from this vegan chicken fried tofu. Think poboys with vegan mayo and crisp lettuce, chick’n salad sandwiches, crispy nuggets dipped in bbq sauce, paired with vegan Mac-n-Cheese, etc. The possibilities are fantastically infinite.

Like with any recipe, I’ll advise you to read all the instructions before you begin. The tofu has to be marinated for several hours before the frying party can begin. So plan ahead for that!

Once the tofu has marinated in the fridge, the rest will come together quickly to get you on your way to hot & crispy chicken fried tofu. Dip, drop, fry, eat. That’s about all there is to it!

Ingredients

For the Marinade:

  • 1 pack extra firm tofu
  • 1 tsp poultry seasoning
  • 1 vegan chicken bouillon cube
  • 1 cup hot water (to dissolve the bouillon cube)
  • 1 cup cool water (to cool down the marinade)

For the Batter:

  • 1/3 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup corn starch
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of poultry seasoning
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 cup cold water

For Frying:

  • Vegetable or canola oil (enough to cover about an inch on the bottom of your pot)

Instructions

Note before beginning: The tofu must marinate overnight (or at least for 4-5 hours).
  1. To prep marinade, dissolve the vegan chicken bouillon cube in the hot water. Once dissolved, add the poultry seasoning and cool water.
  2. Using your hands, break up the tofu into chunks. I like them to be about the size of what a chicken nugget would be. They don’t need to be uniform in shape, but try to keep them all about the same size. Drop the chunks into the marinade and refrigerate overnight or for several hours.
  3. Once the tofu has marinated, you can prep the batter. Mix together all of the batter ingredients. It should be the consistency of pancake batter.
  4. In a large pot, heat the oil. To see if it’s ready, drop a little of the batter in the oil to see if starts fizzing & popping.
  5. Drop each tofu chunk in the batter and make sure each is fully coated all the way around.
  6. Carefully place each coated chunk in the hot oil. Make sure they are not touching each other or they will stick together. Allow to fry for 1-2 minutes and then flip to make sure all sides are fried. Remove when all sides are golden brown.
  7. Allow to cool slightly & enjoy!
